# C-36 Exam Study Plan: How to Pass the California Plumbing Exam in 30 Days
You do not need six months to pass the C-36 exam — but you do need a plan. Studying randomly, or only reviewing what you already know, is how experienced plumbers end up retaking the test. Here is a focused 30-day plan that covers both exams and puts your time where it actually moves the needle. Before you start: know the target
You are preparing for two exams — the Law and Business exam and the C-36 trade exam — each computer-based multiple choice with 3.5 hours allowed. Your plan has to make room for both. Most people over-study the plumbing and under-study the business side, so we build that in.Week 1 — Foundations
Goal: get the lay of the land and stop guessing.
- Take a full-length practice test cold on day one. It will feel rough — that is the point. It shows your real weak areas.
- Review the structure of the California Plumbing Code and the major topic areas: planning and estimating, underground and rough systems, finish plumbing, and safety.
- Start a running list of every topic you miss. That list is your real study guide.
Week 2 — Core plumbing systems and code
Goal: build genuine code knowledge, not just field habits.
- Work through drainage, waste, and vent systems — sizing, slope, cleanouts, and trap rules.
- Cover water supply and distribution — sizing, pressure, and backflow prevention.
- After each topic, do 20 to 30 practice questions on just that topic and review every wrong answer until you understand why.
Week 3 — Calculations and the Law and Business exam
Goal: lock in the math and open the second front.
- Drill the calculations that show up again and again: fixture-unit loads, pipe sizing, and drainage and vent sizing. Do these until they are automatic — calculations are where a lot of points are won or lost.
- Begin the Law and Business material: contracts and required notices, licensing law, employment and labor, safety, insurance and bonds, and lien rules. See our Law and Business exam guide.
- Keep doing mixed practice questions to hold onto Week 2 material.
Week 4 — Practice exams and weak-area cleanup
Goal: build exam stamina and close gaps.
- Take full-length, timed practice exams for both the trade and Law and Business exams. Sit the whole 3.5-hour block so the real thing feels familiar.
- After each practice exam, spend your study time only on what you missed. Do not re-study what you already know — it feels productive but it is not.
- In the final few days, review your weak-areas list one last time and rest. Walking in sharp beats walking in exhausted.
Daily habits that make the difference
- 1 to 2 focused hours a day beats weekend cram marathons. Consistency wins with code and calculations.
- Practice questions are your highest-value activity. Reading is passive; answering questions under time pressure is how you actually learn the exam.
- Always review wrong answers. The goal is to understand the reasoning, not memorize the letter.
